Is It Okay for Business Owners to Take a Vacation? Is It Possible?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I can’t think of a single business owner I know who has not talked about wanting, no NEEDING a vacation.  Todd and I have been fortunate to be able to go on vacation every year since we’ve been in business.  Granted, this is in large part due to generous parents and family vacations.  But that’s another topic…

In the early days we would go on vacation, but I’m not sure we really took a vacation.  We’ve used Remote Web Access since the beginning and used to pick cottages based on Internet availability.  And now with our iPhones, well, you don’t even need your laptop to get work done!

I remember one year in particular when Todd worked daily - even spending the majority of a golf game talking employees through a tricky technical issue.  That was a vacation, but was it relaxing?

This article in the Washington Post makes a great case for not only going on vacation, but actually taking the vacation.  http://bit.ly/1ahzDU

We are so thankful we have a great team who can handle just about anything that might come up while we’re gone.  We are accessible, but they don’t call.  Life is good.  May all of the business owners and managers out there get at least one real vacation this year - your employees will thank you!

Poor Passwords are a Bigger Threat than Viruses

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I read an interesting article from the Channel Insider this afternoon.  According to a recent security study they conducted with CompTIA,

“Solution providers say out-of-date antivirus applications and signature files are the most common problem in 38% of security assessments conducted…In 43% of security assessments, solution providers say they find poor password policies, enforcement and practices.”

I have to say I’m not entirely surprised.  How many of us have used the name of a beloved pet, child, or significant other?  Maybe added “123″ at the end if the system requires a combination of alpha and numeric characters?

You can rely on The HelpDesk Company to keep your antivirus software up-to-date.  And we can work with you to implement a Password Policy for your firm.  However, it’s up to the individual user to ensure that the passwords truly stay secure.

It’s a good quick read that you can find here - http://bit.ly/j2gdB
